A Historic & Heartfelt London Wedding at Trinity House

There are weddings that stay with you forever, and John & Joe’s London celebration at Trinity House, just a stone’s throw from Tower Bridge, was one of those unforgettable days. I’ve had the pleasure of capturing many beautiful love stories — but this one, filled with charm, grandeur and a little royal sparkle, was something truly special.

A Destination Wedding in London

Both from the US, John & Joe are self-confessed Anglophiles. Their love for London runs deep, so when it came time to decide where they’d say “I do”, it was never really a question. It had to be London, and it had to feel unmistakably British.

With the support of the brilliant wedding planner Georgina Alexander – (our fourth time working together!) – the day unfolded with thoughtful details and heartfelt moments, all carefully considered. Georgina’s attention to detail and calm professionalism always makes my job easier, and I’m so grateful for the trust she places in me to capture her couples’ most important memories.

Why Trinity House is One of the Best Historic Wedding Venues in London

Let’s take a moment to appreciate Trinity House, because wow — what a venue. Overlooking the Tower of London, this Grade I-listed Georgian building is a true piece of British history. Built in 1796, Trinity House serves as the headquarters of the General Lighthouse Authority for England, Wales, and other territories. It’s been guiding mariners safely for over 500 years — so, naturally, it’s the perfect place for a couple to begin navigating life together.

The interiors are equally rich in heritage. Think ornate painted ceilings, grand chandeliers, and life-size oil portraits of English royalty adorning the walls — you can’t get more quintessentially British than that!

Film and TV fans might also recognise Trinity House. It has graced the screen in Skyfall, The Crown, Muppets Most Wanted, Lara Croft and more. It’s a venue that tells stories. And on this May day, it became the backdrop to a brand new chapter for John & Joe.

Presidential Post & a Pup Named Louis

The day began with final preparations in the Luncheon Room, after getting ready at the Four Seasons next door. One detail I’ll never forget? A personal letter from former President Joe Biden – politely declining their wedding invitation – on official White House stationery. You know it’s a special day when the President makes a cameo (of sorts).

While their beloved dog Louis couldn’t make the trip across the Atlantic, he was far from forgotten. He featured on drinks napkins, cufflinks, and even the cake! Which brings me to the cake toppers… Fondant models of the grooms on one side, and cheeky Louis on the other – lovingly sculpted mid-bite, attempting to sneak a taste. Hands down, the best cake topper I’ve seen! Louis wasn’t just included — he was everywhere, and I absolutely adored it. It made the day feel even more personal, playful, and true to John & Joe.

A Ceremony Steeped in Royalty

The ceremony took place in The Court Room, one of Trinity House’s most striking spaces. Tall sash windows on one side flood the room with natural light, and the walls are adorned with regal oil paintings – including none other than Henry VIII, who took centre stage above the altar. (The irony of saying “I do” beneath that particular monarch wasn’t lost on any of us!)

It’s dramatic in the best way — equal parts historical gravitas and opulent charm. The atmosphere was emotional but joy-filled, with heartfelt vows exchanged beneath watchful royal gazes.

A Touch of Phantom: Personalised Ceremony Music at Trinity House Wedding

Now, let’s talk about the music. As big musical theatre fans, the soundtrack to their day was carefully curated to reflect their personalities and love story.

A string quartet played throughout the ceremony and drinks reception, adding elegance to every moment. But what made it extra special were the multiple ceremony entrance songs. No fewer than four separate tracks for entrances of the Grooms and their wedding party, each chosen with meaning. Perhaps the most memorable? John & Joe entered to ‘All I Ask of You’ from Phantom of the Opera, the music soaring through the grandeur of The Court Room as they made their way down the aisle.

The whole atmosphere was cinematic, intimate, and completely unique to them. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house!

Dinner, Dancing & Drama

The wedding breakfast took place in The Library, where early summer light poured in through the huge stained glass windows.

After some moving speeches and joyful toasts, John & Joe briefly disappeared. They’d switched up their black tux jackets for fresh white ones — a perfect outfit change for the dramatic sword cake cutting and first dance that followed. From there, the party was well and truly underway. After I’d got the last few shots, packed up and walked to the tube, the sound of music and laughter still spilled out into the street. Now that’s the kind of energy you remember!

  • Kind Words

“Shelby Ellis is unquestionably an artist, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have had her capture our wedding day. For two people who don’t usually like getting their photo taken, the entire experience was a joy for both of us. Every photograph Shelby took beautifully captured the full range of emotions we felt—joy, humor, love, and everything in between. Her ability to see and preserve those moments is truly remarkable.

Shelby and her assistant have a wonderful way of putting everyone at ease. Their warm, disarming energy made the photography experience enjoyable not only for us but also for all of our guests. She has a unique talent for surprising and delighting people, which resulted in candid, heartfelt images that perfectly reflect the spirit of our celebration.

The photos Shelby shared with us brought tears of joy to our eyes. Her artistry ensures that we will be able to relive the magic of our wedding day for a lifetime. We honestly could not have had such a successful and memorable wedding without her.

Simply put, Shelby Ellis is the best photographer we could have asked for, and we wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone looking to capture their special moments with authenticity and beauty.
