The Spa Hotel Wedding with Stunning Sunset

In the heart of Tunbridge Wells, the stage was set for a magical September celebration for Sarah and Jamie’s The Spa Hotel wedding. As a Kent wedding photographer, I had the privilege of capturing every enchanting moment of their special day. On one of the hottest days of the year and with the most beautiful of sunsets, you’d be forgiven for thinking this was a destination wedding!

Double the Joy: Capturing Bridal & Groom Prep

It’s not typical for me to photograph both bridal prep and groom prep on a wedding morning, but this was made possible due to the couple getting ready just a hallway apart from each other in their hotel rooms. There was a particularly lovely moment whilst Jamie got ready where he opened a special gift from his Bride. In fact it wasn’t just one gift, but a series of increasingly personal and heartfelt gifts. One of which was a photo book of their lives together, which made Jamie shed a few tears!

One of the best highlights was witnessing probably the most emotional Father of the Bride reaction I’ve ever captured. As he laid eyes on his daughter in her wedding dress, love and pride overwhelmed him.

Outdoor Temple Ceremony at The Spa Hotel

Bathed in the September sunlight, Sarah and Jamie exchanged vows under The Spa Hotel’s iconic blue-domed temple in a heartfelt outdoor ceremony. The weather gods gifted us with clear blue skies, creating an atmosphere that felt like a romantic escape. The outdoor ceremony felt like a destination wedding. The gentle breeze, the scorching sun, and the laughter of loved ones was the perfect combination for a joyous ceremony.

To combat the warmth of one of the hottest days of the summer, the couple provided handheld paper fans for their guests during the ceremony. A thoughtful gesture that was appreciated by all!

The Wedding Breakfast

The celebration continued with a wedding breakfast held in one of the hotel’s grand event rooms. Later the room transformed revealing a bar, as some dinner tables made way for the dance floor. The atmosphere was electric as the newlyweds and their guests danced the night away.

The speeches during the evening celebration were a real highlight. Not a bored face was seen in the room as heartfelt and humorous stories, free from generic internet jokes, were shared by each speaker. Each speech highlighted the unique bond between Sarah and Jamie, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended. The room resonated with laughter, tears, and the genuine warmth of personal connections.

Favours with Purpose

In lieu of typical favours, such as sweets, seeds or shots, Sarah & Jamie opted for a more meaningful choice. Their generous gift of a charitable donation on behalf of each guest meant that everyone received an enamel pin representing one of their chosen charities, which I thought was a really touching gesture. I often find favours to be quite wasteful since many of the usual ones left behind, but by the end of the first course almost every person was wearing their charity pin. How lovely!

Golden Hour Glow

Amidst the festivities, nature bestowed upon us a breathtaking golden hour. It cast a warm, ethereal glow over the grounds for Sarah and Jamie’s couple portraits. Against the backdrop of The Spa Hotel’s lush surroundings, the couple embraced the magical lighting and my suggestions for the best spots – even if it meant a hefty uphill walk back afterwards! I think you can agree, it was worth it.

Top tip for group photos in harsh sunlight: if shade is limited, opt to do some of your group shots later in the day. This is what Sarah & Jamie chose to do with their bridal party shots. They really wanted the blue-domed temple as the backdrop but this was in harsh sunlight all through the drinks reception. Waiting until the sun was almost set meant a soft, even light. The most flattering light too, as no-one had to squint!
